THE SHORT ANSWER

Check access, secrets and operating responsibilities alongside the visible product.

Map the valuable assets

Identify customer records, administrative capabilities, payment operations and credentials. Consider who can reach each entry point. A useful review follows the actual system rather than a generic checklist alone. Pay particular attention to functions introduced late, such as exports, uploads and support tools, because they may not share the same controls as the main interface.

Verify authorisation

Try accessing another user’s records, changing identifiers and calling administrative operations directly. A hidden control is not a security boundary. Check background tasks and file downloads as well. Use established authentication mechanisms where suitable and define safe account recovery. Record which checks are automated and which need manual assessment.

Inspect configuration and secrets

Remove development credentials and review environment-specific settings. Keep secrets out of repositories, public assets and logs. Check who can deploy and change configuration. Patch management and dependency review need an owner after launch. A secure configuration on release day is only a starting point for continued operation.

Plan the response

Agree incident reporting, access revocation and recovery arrangements. Test the relevant process in a safe environment. Use specialist assessment where the product’s risks justify it. Do not translate a passed checklist into a claim that software is completely secure; describe the scope and limits of the evidence instead.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Your next working session.

  • Test server permissions
  • Review secret handling
  • Assign incident ownership

Bring one real, anonymised example to the discussion. Work through the choices above with the person responsible for the outcome, record the unresolved questions and agree who will investigate them.
