THE SHORT ANSWER

Plan declined payments, delayed confirmation and duplicate clicks as part of the buying journey.

Separate order and payment states

An order can exist before payment is confirmed. Define pending, paid, failed and cancelled states clearly. The return page from a provider should not be the only evidence of payment. Use the provider’s supported confirmation mechanism and reconcile uncertain states rather than assuming every redirect means success.

Protect against repeated actions

People retry when a page appears stuck. Design duplicate protection around the business operation, not just a disabled button. Handle repeated provider events safely. A single purchase should not create multiple fulfilment requests because the same confirmation arrived more than once. Explain progress while the system waits.

Offer a useful recovery route

Keep suitable order details when a payment fails so the customer does not rebuild the basket unnecessarily. Avoid exposing sensitive provider information in the error. Distinguish a declined attempt from an unknown result that needs checking. Staff should have a way to investigate without asking the customer to submit another payment blindly.

Reconcile before fulfilment

Test delayed notifications, refunds, partial changes and provider downtime. Agree which system is authoritative for each status. Monitor orders stuck in intermediate states. A reliable checkout includes the operational process for resolving uncertainty, not merely the successful card-entry screen.

PUT IT INTO PRACTICE

Your next working session.

  • Define payment states
  • Protect duplicate operations
  • Monitor pending orders

Bring one real, anonymised example to the discussion. Work through the choices above with the person responsible for the outcome, record the unresolved questions and agree who will investigate them.
