Compare operational needs, data requirements and recurring costs before selecting infrastructure.
List the workload
Identify runtime needs, expected traffic patterns, storage and background tasks. A mostly informational site and a document-processing service have different requirements. Include supplier dependencies and any justified data-location constraints. Start with the actual application rather than choosing an architecture because it appears in a large company’s engineering presentation.
Account for operational capacity
Managed services can remove some maintenance work while adding cost and platform constraints. Self-managed infrastructure gives control but requires someone to patch, monitor and recover it. Choose an arrangement the team can operate. An inexpensive server is not inexpensive if nobody has the time or knowledge to maintain it safely.
Price the surrounding services
Include databases, storage, backups, logs, outgoing traffic and test environments. Model representative usage and a plausible busy period. Avoid treating an introductory allowance as the long-term budget. Set billing alerts and clarify ownership of the cloud account so a payment problem does not become an unexpected outage.

Keep recovery practical
Agree backup and restore responsibilities, deployment rollback and incident contacts. Test a recovery procedure in a safe environment. Simple architecture with documented operations can be a stronger first release than a distributed system whose failure modes the team cannot yet explain. Revisit the design when evidence justifies more capacity or separation.

- Describe workloads
- Budget for operations
- Rehearse recovery
Bring one real, anonymised example to the discussion. Work through the choices above with the person responsible for the outcome, record the unresolved questions and agree who will investigate them.
