Compare planned increments and flow management without treating a framework as a guarantee.
Look at the work arriving
A team building a defined product increment faces different pressures from a team handling unpredictable support requests. Assess how often priorities change, what interrupts work and who makes product decisions. Choose a working arrangement around those conditions. A familiar framework name does not resolve unclear priorities or missing decision-makers.
Use Scrum deliberately
Scrum organises work around a Product Goal, a Product Backlog and Sprints, with defined accountabilities and events. It can support regular inspection of progress. The important question is whether stakeholders can contribute decisions and feedback at the required rhythm. Calling occasional status meetings Scrum does not establish those responsibilities.
Use Kanban to understand flow
Kanban draws attention to the workflow, work in progress and how work moves through the system. Visualise the real stages and make policies explicit. Limiting unfinished work can expose bottlenecks. Moving cards across a board is not enough if blocked work remains hidden and everything is treated as equally urgent.

Agree practical operating rules
Define prioritisation, reviews, acceptance and escalation regardless of the chosen method. Use evidence from delivery to adjust the arrangement. Scrum and Kanban practices may support the same organisation in different contexts. Neither promises a particular commercial outcome; clear goals and responsible decisions still matter.
Your next working session.
- Assess arrival patterns
- Define decision ownership
- Review bottlenecks
Bring one real, anonymised example to the discussion. Work through the choices above with the person responsible for the outcome, record the unresolved questions and agree who will investigate them.
